Classic Homemade Lasagna

Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 400g canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups (500ml) milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

For Assembly:

  • 9–12 lasagna sheets (pre-cooked or no-boil)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent.

Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, then add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop.

Step 2: Make the Béchamel Sauce

In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute to form a roux.

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue stirring until the sauce thickens.

Add salt and a pinch of nutmeg. Remove from heat.

Step 3: Assemble the Lasagna

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

In a baking dish, start layering:

  1. A thin layer of meat sauce
  2. Lasagna sheets
  3. Meat sauce
  4. Béchamel sauce
  5. A sprinkle of mozzarella

Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with béchamel and cheese on top. Sprinkle Parmesan for extra flavor.

Step 4: Bake

Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Step 5: Rest Before Serving

Let the lasagna rest for about 10 minutes before cutting. This helps it hold its shape.

Tips & Variations

  • Add spinach or mushrooms for extra flavor
  • Use a mix of beef and pork for richer taste
  • Substitute béchamel with ricotta for a different style
  • Make it ahead—it tastes even better the next day

Conclusion

This classic homemade lasagna is the perfect combination of richness, texture, and comfort. Each layer brings something unique, creating a dish that is both satisfying and memorable.

Although it takes a bit of time, the result is absolutely worth it. It’s the kind of recipe that becomes a family favorite—one you’ll return to again and again for special moments or whenever you crave something truly comforting.
