Mushroom and Cream Cheese Puff Pastry Bites
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 250 g fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 100 g cream cheese
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon thyme, fresh or dried
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Sesame seeds, optional
Instructions
1. Prepare the mushroom filling
Heat the olive oil and butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until soft and lightly golden.
Add the garlic and sliced mushrooms. Season with salt, black pepper and thyme.
Cook until the mushrooms release their liquid and become golden. This helps prevent the pastry from becoming soggy.
2. Add the cream cheese
Remove the pan from the heat.
Stir in the cream cheese and chopped parsley.
Mix until the filling is creamy and well combined.
Let it cool slightly before filling the pastry.
3. Prepare the puff pastry
Preheat the oven to 200°C / 400°F.
Unroll the puff pastry and cut it into 8 equal squares.
Place a spoonful of mushroom filling in the centre of each square.
4. Shape the pastries
Fold each square in half to form triangles or rectangles.
Press the edges with a fork to seal.
Mix the egg yolk with the milk and brush the tops of the pastries.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
5. Bake
Place the pastries on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until golden, puffed and crisp.
Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
Tips
For extra flavour, add a little grated parmesan to the filling.
You can replace cream cheese with ricotta, goat cheese or mascarpone.
Serve warm for the best flaky texture.
These pastries are great with soup, salad or a simple yoghurt and herb dip.
Conclusion
These mushroom and cream cheese puff pastry bites are easy, elegant and delicious. The crisp pastry, creamy mushroom filling and fresh herbs make them perfect for gatherings, brunches or quick homemade snacks.
