4th of July BBQ Chicken Sliders with Creamy Coleslaw

%title % 4th of july bbq chicken sliders with creamy coleslaw

These 4th of July BBQ Chicken Sliders with Creamy Coleslaw are the perfect savoury recipe for an American summer celebration. They are small, easy to serve, full of flavour and ideal for a party table, picnic, backyard barbecue or family lunch.

Instead of a heavy main dish, these sliders are practical and fun. The chicken is cooked until tender, shredded and mixed with a smoky barbecue sauce. The creamy coleslaw adds freshness, crunch and balance, making every bite rich but not too heavy.

This recipe is also great because it can be prepared in advance. You can make the chicken earlier in the day, keep it warm, and assemble the sliders just before serving. They are perfect for guests because everyone can grab one without needing a full plate and cutlery.

BBQ Chicken Sliders with Creamy Coleslaw

Ingredients

For the BBQ chicken

  • 700 g boneless chicken breasts or chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 250 ml barbecue sauce
  • 100 ml chicken stock
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

For the creamy coleslaw

  • 2 cups shredded white cabbage
  • 1 cup shredded red cabbage
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yoghurt or sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

To serve

  • 10 to 12 slider buns
  • Pickles, optional
  • Extra barbecue sauce
  • Butter, for toasting the buns

Instructions

Start by preparing the BBQ chicken. Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until soft and slightly golden. Add the garlic and cook for another minute, stirring so it does not burn.

Add the chicken to the pan, followed by the barbecue sauce, chicken stock, honey, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper and apple cider vinegar. Stir everything together, cover the pan and let it cook over low heat for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until the chicken is tender and fully cooked.

Remove the chicken from the pan and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the sauce and mix well. Let it cook for another 5 minutes so the chicken absorbs all the flavour. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a small splash of chicken stock.

Now prepare the coleslaw. In a large bowl, combine the white cabbage, red cabbage and grated carrot. In a separate small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, Greek yoghurt, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, sugar, salt and black pepper.

Pour the dressing over the vegetables and mix until everything is coated. Keep the coleslaw in the fridge until ready to serve.

Before assembling the sliders, cut the buns in half and lightly toast them with a little butter. This gives them more flavour and helps prevent them from becoming soggy.

Place a generous spoonful of BBQ chicken on the bottom half of each bun. Add a spoonful of creamy coleslaw on top. Finish with pickles if desired, then close with the top half of the bun.

Serve immediately with extra barbecue sauce on the side.

Conclusion

These 4th of July BBQ Chicken Sliders with Creamy Coleslaw are a great alternative to burgers or hot dogs. They are easy to eat, full of smoky flavour and perfect for a relaxed summer celebration.

The tender chicken, sweet barbecue sauce and crunchy coleslaw create a balanced combination that works beautifully for both adults and children. You can serve them with fries, corn on the cob, potato salad or fresh watermelon slices.

They are simple, festive and ideal for sharing — exactly the kind of food that belongs on a 4th of July table.
